Every once in a while, I have problems with the closed captioning on the Roku device on my TV. This is what it looks like: See the problem? The problem is the closed captioning. It is too slow, and sometimes it doesn’t work at all. I don’t believe that Roku is the problem, because in the past I would have just restarted my Roku and the problem would go away for a few days. In this case, the problem lasted for months. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the device, so I decided to do some research to try and find the problem.
Subtitling is an accessibility feature that has been around for some time. They are generally very useful for the hard of hearing and hearing impaired. Subtitles are used when the sound cannot be loud enough to disturb the audience. Sometimes the included subtitles are irritating and you just want to turn them off. In this article, we’ll look at how to turn off subtitles on your Roku device.
Subtitles are a useful feature that displays the text accompanying the speech, and can be useful when some dialogues are confusing and difficult to understand. A popular example is YouTube with subtitles that can be turned on or off with one click. Service providers also have the option of offering subtitles. If a particular service does not have subtitles and you turn it on, you will not find the subtitles.
Now let’s see how to disable closed captioning on Roku (both on the streaming set-top box and on the TV).
Disable subtitles on Roku
There are two ways to turn off subtitles. Let’s start with the first and simplest method.
Method 1 – Disable closed captioning on Roku with Star
The first method is the simplest and easiest way to disable subtitles on your Roku device. If you look on the remote control of the Roku, you’ll see a button with a star on it. Pressing this button opens a menu of options. Scroll through the menu until you find subtitles. Select it and choose one of the available options, for example B. On, Off, Play, or Mute.
Method 2 – Disable subtitles on Roku via the Settings application
The second method is to use the Settings app on Roku devices. To turn off subtitles on your Roku device, follow these steps.
- Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
- Scroll down the menu and select Settings.
- Under Settings, click Accessibility or Registration. (May differ between Roku devices)
- Now select the labelling mode. You will see a large number of options to choose from.
- Options : On, Off, During playback and Mute.
- If On is selected, the titles are always activated.
- If Off is selected, the tracks are immediately disabled.
- When On Replay is selected, subtitles are activated when the user presses the play button on the remote control. This only works if the content is compatible with instant replay.
- Finally, the When Mutes feature causes subtitles to be displayed on content when the user mutes the Roku device. This feature is only available on certain Roku devices.
- Just select Off to turn off subtitles on the Roku.
Whatever setting you make for subtitles, the Roku remembers them no matter what program you’re watching. You can also turn off subtitles on your Roku device, even in the middle of a program. One of the best things is that the above method works with any streaming service like Sling, Amazon Prime Vide, Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus and others. If you want to bring back the closed captions, just follow the same steps to activate them.
