Kodi addons / modules offer unlimited streaming content, but can also get you in legal trouble if you get caught watching movies / TV shows / sports for free. Kodi users are strongly advised to always connect a VPN when streaming online. A good Kodi VPN can hide your identity, bypass government surveillance, block content, and ISP throttling (which also contributes to buffer-free streaming).

I use ExpressVPN, which is the fastest and most secure VPN. It is very easy to install on any device, including the Amazon FireStick. Get 3 months free and save 49% on annual plans. There is also a 30 day money back guarantee. If you are not satisfied, you can always ask for a refund.

Viewing the Kodi log with the Log Viewer for Kodi addon

If for some reason you can’t access the log file on the storage device, you can always use a Kodi add-on called Log Viewer for Kodi. With this add-on you can view the logs of Kodi without having to search for the folder.

Log Viewer for Kodi is available in the official Kodi add-on repository. I’ll show you how to install this add-on. Here are the steps.

#1. You must first click on the Tools option in the left sidebar. You can find it on the Kodi home screen.

#2. Now click on the open window icon in the top left corner, also called package installer.

#3. Open the Install from memory option.

#4. On the next screen, tap Kodi Add-ons.

#5. Scroll down a bit and select Program Extras.

#6. Now scroll down to section L. A little scrolling is required. Select the Log Viewer add-on for Kodi.

#7. Click the Install button at the bottom left of the next screen to install the Kodi Log Viewer add-on.

#8. Wait until the add-on is installed. This should take no more than 30-60 seconds. Once the installation is complete, you will see a notification in the upper right corner that the add-on has been installed.

#9. Now go back to the Kodi home screen and go to Add-ons > Software Add-ons. You will now see the Log Viewer for Kodi add-on under other program add-ons.  Click on it to open an extension module

#10. You will now see three options – Show log, Show old log and Settings. The most recent logs can be viewed under View logs. If you encounter Kodi errors, open this section to get the latest Kodi logs.

If you want to consult older magazines, you can find them in the section Consult older magazines.

Under Settings you can change some settings and customize the log display. We’ll talk about the parameters later. Let’s open Show magazine first.

#11. This is what your Kodi magazine will look like. I don’t know why, but the magazines are sorted by age first. You will have to scroll down to see the latest magazines. However, you can change the sorting order of the logs and display the most recent logs first.

#12. Launch Log Viewer for Kodi again and this time open the settings.

#13. You can see it in the Settings section. Enable the Reverse logs (newest first) option to sort the logs from newest to oldest. Enabling this option also includes the Number of Lines Displayed parameter. You can display all rows or select the desired number (20, 50 and 100 are other options).

If you want Kodi to automatically display the log when an error occurs, select the Show log when error occurs option.

If you enable the Use custom text fields option, the logs are displayed full screen.

Enable the debugging log for more information about error

If Kodi or an add-on is not behaving properly and you want help from an expert, make sure you provide as much information as possible about the error. This will help the Kodi support forum experts to understand the problem better and suggest more appropriate solutions.

When debug logging is enabled, additional information about the error is added to the Kodi logs. This additional information may be essential to solve the problem. So, before creating a log file with the Kodi Log Viewer or any other add-on, it is useful to enable the debugging log.

Here’s how you can do it:

#1. Open the Settings menu by tapping the cog icon in the top left corner of the Kodi home screen.

#2. Now open the system settings from the options list for Kodi 17.6 or just the system for Kodi 18.

#3. Select Logging from the left sidebar and you will see the corresponding options on the right. As shown in the figure below, enable the Enable Debug Registration option by sliding the toggle switch. Once you have done this, additional log information will appear in the top left corner of the Kodi window.

You don’t have to worry about this information. But it will add very useful data to the Kodi log that developers or Kodi support forum experts can use to resolve the issue. Reboot Kodi after enabling this option and reproduce the error. Many new details are added to the log file.

I know that extra overlay at the top of every Kodi screen can be pretty irritating. This may divert your attention from the content when watching a movie or other content. However, it is not necessary to leave the Enable debugging logging option permanently enabled. After you generate the error again and add more information to the log, you can turn it off again.

To upload the Kodi error log directly to the server using the Kodi LogFile Uploader

With the Log Viewer plugin for Kodi, you can view the logs. That’s good! But what if you need to share the journal in a support forum or with an expert? One option is of course to find the log file in the memory of the device and upload it to the Kodi support forum.  This seems to be a time consuming process and often users cannot find the log folder. Fortunately, there is an easier way.

With the Kodi Logfile Uploader add-on, you can upload your logs directly to the server and share the URL with interested parties. This add-on is also available in the official Kodi add-on repository.

I will show you how to install and use Kodi Logfile Uploader. I disabled the debug log because it hides the icons at the top and the images don’t make much sense to you. Therefore, make sure that error logging is enabled before performing the following steps.

#1. On the home page, open Add-ons again and click on the Open Package icon in the upper left corner.

#2. On the next screen, open Install from Repository again and select Kodi Add-ons Repository.

#3. Now open the Add-ons program

#4. Scroll down to section K and select the Kodi Logfile Uploader add-on.

#5. On the next screen, click Install (the button on the bottom right) and wait until the add-on is installed as usual. If you see the notification of the installed add-on in the top right corner of the screen, it means you are done.

#6. Now go back to the home screen and go to Add-ons > Program Add-ons and you should see an add-on icon here.

#7. Open the addendum. You will first be asked if you want to view or download the log file. Click View to easily view the log file. Click on Download to download it.

After you click the Download button, a new pop-up window will appear with the URL. You can visit this URL to view the logs. Share this URL with a description of the problem on the Kodi support forum.

As you can see, there is a QR code for the log file. Just scan the code with your mobile phone and you will receive a link to download the file to your device.

Each time you open this add-on, a new URL is created with an updated log file.

#8. Here is what the Kodi error log data looks like when displayed via a URL:

Kodi error log: Supplement

If you encounter a Kodi error for which you cannot find a solution, you can ask for help in the Kodi support forum or to another Kodi expert you know. You will probably be prompted for a Kodi log file. This file contains all the necessary details about the Kodi error and allows you to find a more accurate solution. You can open the kodi.log file at the location I specified. However, if this is too cumbersome for you, you can install the Log Viewer for Kodi and Kodi Logfile Uploader add-ons.

Both add-ons are in the official Kodi add-ons repository. You don’t need a log file every day. However, if you get an error message, you should check the log for more information. That’s exactly what this article is about. I hope you found it useful.  If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to leave a comment below. Thanks for reading!
