Fingerprint doesn’t work in Windows 10 [Windows Hello]

Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system is touted as the most secure version of Windows to date. Windows Hello, its new way of logging in to Windows, stores your fingerprint, iris scans, or face recognition data in one place. This is supposed to make the experience as secure as possible. How secure is your data really?

The fingerprint sensor on the Microsoft Lumia 950 is a great idea in theory, but in practice it’s a disaster. It’s been found to be constantly inconsistent, with many reports of it failing to unlock the phone.

What should I do if my fingerprint reader does not work in Windows 11?

After the upgrade to Windows 11, many users complained on the Microsoft Answers site that their fingerprint reader stopped working and they could not use it to log in :

I upgraded to Windows 11 from a Windows 10 laptop and met all the requirements. Since then, I have not been able to use the fingerprint reader on my laptop. After a day, even the login options in the Settings application no longer open. I reinstalled my biometric drivers, but that didn’t help. Please help me to solve this problem. Is this a bug and will it be fixed in future updates?

Since this issue has been reported by several ASUS laptop users, we can assume that there are compatibility issues with the respective drive drivers.

However, a user responded in the same thread that the fingerprint reader on his ASUS laptop works fine.

In any case, this does not seem to be an isolated case, as other users with the same problem have complained on the Acer community page:

My Acer 5 fingerprint reader worked fine with Windows 10. When I upgraded to Windows 11, it stopped working. There are no options in the Windows 11 sign-in window (Settings, Accounts, Sign-in Settings). Is there a solution or will there be one in the future? Will the patch automatically install Windows Update?

In this case, the user can update the fingerprint reader driver in the Biometrics section of the Device Manager and resolve the issue immediately.

We don’t have an official solution, but it’s probably a driver compatibility issue that will gradually be updated as Windows 11 matures.

It is often best to use the latest driver optimized for Windows 10. Therefore, go to the manufacturer of your fingerprint scanner and check if they provide the latest drivers for Windows 10.

If there are no drivers available for Windows 10, you can just download the latest drivers.

It should also be noted that in some cases the older drivers work better than the newer ones, so you should also try the older drivers.

Manually updating the drivers is risky, so we recommend that you download and install special software for automatic updating.

This way you protect your system from damage caused by downloading and installing incorrect driver versions.

Some of the most common Windows errors and crashes are due to old or incompatible drivers. To avoid such problems, you can use an automated utility that finds, downloads and installs the correct driver version for your Windows PC with just a few clicks. We recommend DriverFix:

To do this, launch the application and select the update option or download the latest version from the HP website.

After updating the application, restart the computer and the fingerprint reader will work again.

Note that this solution only works if you are using an HP device. If you have a different PC and the HP Support Wizard is not installed on your PC, this solution does not apply to you.
